Mongol Blu-Ray Review

Mongol Blu-Ray

Beautifully Shot, But Too Slow Pace

The life on the step sounds like a quite lonely and boring one, but not for this fierce Mongol. Genghis Khan seem to have lived a pretty exciting life, involving a lot of horseback riding, sword wielding, torture, and the occational cosy moment with his ladyfriend, as well as a stint in jail. This epic depicts his journey from a little kid who’s getting life’s rough treatment by seing his father getting killed by his sneaky enemies, to his great victory as the ruler of the step.

The movie has a quite slow pace, and is not the same experience as watching the lord of the rings. And altought is has at least two quite massive battle scenes (which are very bloody), the fights never feels as epic as said trilogy. In contrast it has some really good acting by to me previously unknown actors (haven’t really seen anything in Mongol before…), and feels a lot more genuine (could be because LOTR is pure fantasy ;-)

The picture quality is quite decent, although its 1080p lines are not as crisp and detailed as one would have hoped for in a new Blu-Ray release, and the sound is a tad numb in Dolby Digital 5.1.

Overall this is a quite enjoyable film if you’re not after instant gratification and appreciate a slower paced narrative, and don’t mind the history lesson. Recommend a rent over buy though.
