If you only had this much fun watching this movie.
With a film written and created by the Coen brothers coupled with a rock solid cast, things can surely not go wrong, can they? Well, it depends. Burn After Reading definitely has a couple of real high points. Among them are the great performances from George Clooney as a nevrotic ladies man, John Malkovich as the angry intelligence agent, and Frances McDormand as a desperate single with serious self-esteem issues but a constant optimistic outlook on life. What I don’t get however is Brad Pitts over the top character which is only too much of a parody to enjoy, and just makes you feel a bit embarrassed to actually watch in action. He’s just trying to damn hard to be as funny as the rest of the cast, when in fact he is just not.
The story is as twisted as come to be expected from a Coen flick, and you can expect a couple of shockers and usual bit of grizzly scenes to stir things up. The pace is leisurely slow, but it pulls down the overall impact of the movie.
Looking at the Blu-Ray release, the picture quality is very sharp as can be noticed in the many close ups, and the DTS-HD soundtrack quite effective at times.
It’s by all means well worth a watch if you enjoy previous pictures from the brothers, but you should probably rent it first before splashing out to add to your library.
